Prometheus Books: Amherst, NY, 1995. Pages 225 - 233. Read from the bottom of 225, "The escalator of reason." ONE TAKEAWAY: This article discusses the idea of reason being developed in order for humans to survive and reproduce successfully. However, over the years reason has been developed in a way to make us think much more critically and understand different societal values. This ties into the book The Trial and many utilitarian society novels, because it teaches us that reason guides humans to question their surroundings and beliefs. ONE QUESTION: Can we use reason as a weapon to guide or mislead people? ONE COMMENT: Reasoning is a very important because it helps us understand our surroundings better and makes us more of an individual. On the other hand, I understand that reasoning can also be harmful to us because sometimes it is not worth it. For instance, in seminar we spent a long time discussing The Trial where we got to see the main character try to use reason in order to prove his innocence. However, at the end of the story he ultimately dies, and reason fails him. However, this can also be seen as a good thing because he was a mere pawn in society,
