ASSIGNMENT 1 2 Assignment 1 Alignment of HRM and Business Strategies Marriott International, Inc. is an American Multinational operating in the hospitality sector. It is a global lodging company operating in 127 nations with an estimated number of 6,500 properties. In the 2017 fiscal year, the company realized a net revenue of $22 billion. Marriott International Inc. has its headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland on the outside of Washington. A more significant part of the firm can be attributed to its human resources strategy. The multinational boasts of several HR practices that have resulted in the company getting the reputation of being the best place wok, especially in the hospitality sector. Most of the company’s HR initiatives are based on its HR philosophy and the “Spirit to Serve” culture. On the other, Marriot International has an established business strategy that is aimed at turning the company into being the world’s best and favorite firm. The firm has ensured that all critical people including associates, shareholders, and owners, as well as the human resources, are part of their business strategy. In all its operations, the company has strived to remain faithful to their core values which are: serving the world, acting with integrity, embracing change, pursuing change, and putting all people first. All these elements are fundamental components of the company's business strategy. The firm’s way of doing business is also centered on a sustainability strategy. How to Ensure That HR Strategy Is Aligned With the Business Strategy Marriott can align it HR strategy with business strategy in several ways. This is especially important since the HR function has a more profound effect on business operations in the modern business world than any other function. ASSIGNMENT 1 3 should start with the responsibility of enterprise-wide staffing, and should as well extend the entire cycle of employment and retention of workers. Also, the alignment of the HR strategy with the business strategy should keenly consider the areas where the two functions intersect. Some of the areas of intersection include safety and security, compensation and benefits, as well as employee retention and engagement. Also, Marriott should ensure that acquisition of talents, management of performance, as well as training and development of employees is carried out in consideration to both the HR and business strategies. As well, in aligning its HR strategy to business strategy, Marriot should start by understanding their business strategy. This is particularly important a business strategy is a core to the company. In the second step, the Marriott should assess a diverse range of its current conditions, which are vital to integrating the two functions. Thirdly, an HR strategy should be planned and implemented.
