Section 1- Politics of the Roaring Twenties Nativism- favors native born citizens; prejudice against foreign-born people, swept the nation. Isolationism- this belief also spread, a policy of pulling away from involvement in world affairs; (staying out og war affairs Communism- threat to American life, a one party system of goverment/ an economic and political system based on a single-party goverment ruled by a dictatorship. Equalizes wealth and power… they put an end to private property and causes fear to arises Red Scare : a panic that began after revolutionaries in Russia overthrew the czarist regime. Then, Vladimir I. Lenin implemented a communist idea in Russia, establishing a new Communist state. Communits or “Reds” called for a worldwide revolution that would abolish capitalism everywhere. Then a Communist Party formed in the United States. Radicals joined, including some from the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Alexander Mitchell Palmer - took action to combat the “Red Scare” The Palmer Raids are named after him ; assisted by J. Edgar Hoover. They both hunted down suspected Communists, socialists, and anarchists. Anarchists- people who opposed any form of goverment. Red Scare - great fear of communist; impacts the labor field; became great fear of foreigners/immigrants too Sacco & Vanzetti - both were Italian immigrants and anarchists; acccused and arrested for robbery and murder on May 1920; found guilty and executed seven years later on August 23, 1927 Klan Rises Again: use thier anti-communism ideas to harass any group that were not like them; opposed African Americans, Roman Catholics, Jews, any immigrant/foreign born people, and unions. Has 4.5 million members by 1924; controlling their state politics By 1919-1920, immigrants had grown almost to 600 % & response to nativist pressure led Congress to limit immigration from certain countries Quota System: system that set limits on how many immigrants each country will admit each year; established the maximum # if people who could ente US from each foregin country Goal was to cut sharply European immigration to US,, In 1924 it was achieved and reduced European arrivials down by 2%
