LEGALITY OF LEAVING PRETEEN CHILDREN AT HOME 2 Abstract More than 7 million children in the U.S. are aged between 5 and 14 years. At some points, parents have to make the difficult decision of leaving this category of children at home alone to work demands, single parenthood, and lack of reliable or affordable daycares. Leaving children at home exposes them to a lot to home accidents, abuse, and may be seen as a form of negligence. Although there are recommendations on when parents should leave their kids alone, the most significant number of states do not have laws concerning this aspect. Child abuse and protection are used in prosecuting offences that result in parents leaving children at home. This investigation is intended to investigate the legality of leaving preteen children on their own and the impact it has on their rights, child abuse, and negligence. Three research questions are used to guide the investigation: 1) does the absence of laws concerning leaving children at home expose kids to maltreatment and negligence? 2) What are the potential adverse effects of leaving preteen children on their own for an extended period? 3) Is it adequate to only integrate the legality of leaving preteen children at home on their own in child abuse and protection laws? The investigation will give recommendations on whether there is a need for legal implications for leaving preteens at home on their own or not.
