Castillo 1 Natalie Castillo Mrs. Manuel English 3 – Green 29 January 2019 One Sick Mind and One Sick Body The mind and body are two co-existing realms insides humans. Without the mind, the body is useless, but without the body the mind is useless. The mind and the body depend on and affect each other. This is what Edgar Allen Poe tries to explain through Madeline and Roderick in the Fall of the House of Usher . Madeline and Roderick are opposites with Roderick have the functional body while Madeline has the functional mind. By looking at the actions and characteristic of Roderick and Madeline the reader sees the connection between mind and body. Madeline may be the body, but Roderick is the mind which is arguably the sickest. Roderick writes to the narrator about a" mental disorder which oppressed him"(Poe 4) and begs him to come keep him company. Roderick body may be fine and mobile, but his mind keeps him trapped and lonely. Roderick mental illness is shown in his art work which looks like he had just " [thrown] upon his canvas" (Poe 12).
