McMillian 1 Jayden McMillian Prof.Dawson EGL 1010 21 October 2019 Social Media Effects On Society In today’s society, social media is something that is used by everyone, however, there are many young people who can not seem to monitor themselves effectively and are addicted to social media. Social media is well respected by many but some do not even realize the consequences it comes with if you abuse it. Social media is a tool that teens have fallen in love with but it does not prove very beneficial for them because many teens can not seem to control their urge of using it, and it can lead to many dangerous/harmful consequences if it is not used in moderation. This addiction to social media has a plethora of negative effects including bad direct communication skills, no risk taking, cyberbullying, and predatory stalking. Social media has caused many problems in teen’s everyday life schedule and it does hinder their ability to do a lot of things. Indirect or bad direct communication skills teens have mastered this and not in a pleasant way. Teens are masters at keeping themselves occupied way after their bedtime due to their phone whether it is social media, texting their friends, etc. Even when these teens do their homework they are constantly talking to someone while on the phone or scrolling through these social media sights it is really a terrible habit that a lot of them can not seem to stop. Even when teens are hanging out with friends, the way they interact is very odd there dialogue with one another is very choppy they constantly have their phones in there hands while talking and and they just fail to have any real-time interactions with one another. “There is no question kids now are missing out on very critical social skills ( Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair ) ”.

McMillian 2 In a way it is not like texting and communicating online is terrible or not beneficial, instead it does put everyone around you in a nonverbal realm whereas body language, facial expressions, and even the most irrelevant kinds of vocal sounds made can become invisible because everyone has adjusted to the indirect communication. For one case most modern teens are learning how to do a good amount of their communication nonverbally opposed to face to face or direct communication.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
