Desiree Herman Mrs. Coons Discovery English October 4, 2019 Professional Pilots A professional pilot career comes with many options from storm hunting, to cargo, to commercial, even flying for a morgue; job opportunities for pilots are nearly endless. Although I am still searching over different fields of work to join as a pilot the one I am focused on as of now is the Commercial Airline Industry. My family fully supports my decision and are helping me immensely by leading me to the right direction, and covering costs while I’m still in High School. According to the FAA, or the federal aviation administration, website, an average of 870,000 pilots in the last three decades has decreased by 30%. Worldwide, the number of pilots needed to compensate for the excessive retirement of baby boomers is around 790,000 as noted by Barbra Peterson in her article, “How the Pilot Shortage Could Change the Way We Fly”. As the pilot shortage continues in a downward slope, the demand for air travel is at its highest. In commercial airlines alone there are about 4.6 billion passengers traveling yearly around the globe with over 20,000 airplanes constantly above us. There’s an estimated 102,465 commercial airplanes flying per day and only around 130,000 commercial pilots to fly them as of 2019. Without pilots traveling, business connections, importing goods, emergency issues, air force protection, and so many other things made possible through flight would be stopped completely.

Pilots are important to have because they keep the economy steady, they connect people with different cultures and continents, and they maintain the worlds fast paced rhythm. A pilots salary differs for each offered job. Smaller jobs such as crop dusting, banner flying, flight instructors, etc. can make around $30 to $40 an hour while airline pilots, cargo pilots, and other various large corporation jobs offer $79 to $96 and hour for captains and $50 to $55 for first officers as noted by the Airline Pilot Salary website by the Epic Flight Academy. Of course different corporations offer higher or lower salaries, for example delta airline captains are paid $261,000 yearly for first years while Air Wisconsin pays first year captains $68,000 years.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
