Psychological testing is important in all fields of psychology to better understand the patient. One of the first steps in patient therapy and clinical psychology is identifying the problem with the patient presented. Psychologists identify the patients problems through test- ing, in order to further their treatment and help them recover throughout sessions. Testing in clinical psychology are similar to medical testing, they have the same goal in trying to iden- tify symptoms and create an accurate diagnosis. Both tests and assessments can be used to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan for the patients future in therapy. These tests addi- tionally help in determining more about the patients strengths, weaknesses, IQ, and cognitive abilities. Therefore, testing is important in the first stages of therapy to help identity which treatment to use on the specific patient and their diagnosis. Although all psychological testing and assessments have the same end goal of getting to know the patient and diagnosing them there are many different types of testing that can be administered. Usually psychologists will interview the patient in order to start off treatment and get to learn more about why the patient wants to attend therapy and what they plan to ac- complish in therapy. The interview usually consists of a collection of information from the patient including family life, important background personal information, and mental health history. These interviews are vital when a new patient starts attending therapy because it helps the patient and psychologist establish a relationship. By releasing personal information and revealing how they handle stress through verbal and non verbal behaviors, the patient is building a relationship with the professional. This relationship is vital between the two be- cause it allows the patient to use free association and express their emotions and thoughts at any moment during the session.
