Desiree Herman #2 Victorian Child Labor Compared to Child Labor Today Child labor in during the industrialization was by far the most horrifying version of underaged, low paying, atrocious work. Unfortunately, child labor is a continuous practice in particular countries today. Although similar, the conditions of child labor in today’s society are seemingly less barbarous compared to the Industrial Revolution child labour. According to “Victorian Child Labour”, by Anne Lesley, Child labor in Great Britain involved cruel conditions, harsh beatings, and difficult low paying jobs for young children. Jobs such as chimney sweeping, factory working, coal mining, etc. produced distortion, starvation, disease, and in many cases death for young, working children. Lesley describes cases in which “very few ever made it to middle age”. Despite children being noticable starved and beaten by their employers, child labor was an acceptable action; unlike the abundant laws against child labor and abuse today.
