Alfred wegener and the continental drift Born Nov. 1, 1880 in Germany interested at an early greenland Doctoral degree (Meteorology) in 1904 - University of Berlin. In 1912 proposed a theory that all earth's landmasses were joined together Pangea means “all land” in greek Wegener's theory was called continental drift. Wegener presented this theory to the american association of petroleum geologists. Wegner bases his theory on 4 major pieces of evidence: puzzle pieces, matching fossils, (plants and animals), matching folded mountain belts, ancient climates! Harry hammond hess (1906-1969) Geology professor at princeton university Served in the navy While in the navy, became interested in mapping the ocean floor Used sonar to map the floor of the north pacific (Similar to echolocation). Harry hess published ‘the history of ocean basin’ Outlined a theory that could explain how contains could actually move. This theory became known as ‘sea floor spreading’ Sea floor spreading
