MGMT 302_6 Chapter 8: Training What’s the business case for training? Increasing competition, nationally and internationally Move to service and knowledge based economies Technology and tools change rapidly Train effectively and compete more effectively Training and Development Training o The process of teaching employees the skills necessary to perform a job o Tent to think of this as applying to the job someone is currently in Development o Ongoing learning and education o We tend to think about this as applying to a future job or future responsibilities What are we trying to do with training? What’s the outcome we care about o We want to see employees master KSAs o We want to see employees use these KSAs in their work Training should drive business results Training Design Process – from the book 1. Conduct a needs assessment a. Who needs training? b. What should be trained? c. Are employees ready to be trained/ capable of learning? 2. Determine how to shape behavior a. How do people learn? How can we best hope to change their on-the-job behavior? i. Active practice ii. Overlearning iii. Behavioral modeling iv. Error-based examples (uses real cases) v. Reinforcement 3. Design the training a. Determine how and what you will train b. Make specific design choices c. Determine the delivery method 4. Deliver the training a. Actually conduct the training 5. Evaluate the training a. Determine if the time is working What’s missing about the needs assessment? If the system does not change, it will not support and sustain individual behavior change – indeed, it will set people up to fail It is easier to point towards skill/competency gaps in individuals than to identify that our management culture is toxic, it doesn’t allow full and open communication, I doesn’t support or empower lower level employees, or its rooted in strict policies and procedures that inhibit effectiveness If there is not “fertile soil” for individuals to grow, change will not occur
