To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1960) Harper Lee’s first novel was hugely successful when it was published in 1960, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (1961) and adapted into an Academy Award-winning film (1962). Narrated by six-year-old Jean Louise (Scout) Finch, the novel deals with themes of violence, racial inequality, social justice, and life in small-town Alabama during the Great Depression. As you read, answer the questions below for each group of chapters. Pay attention to how characters are introduced and characterized, and how the interactions and relationships of these characters contribute to understanding the themes and meaning of the novel as a whole. Character Chart Character Who is he/she? What qualities does this character possess? Scout A 6-8 year old Girl Youngest of Atticus’ children Jem’s little sister Dill’s ‘wife’ Named Jean Louise Scout is very stubborn and hot-heated; throughout the book she loses her cool quite easily. She’s also very protective of Atticus and Jem, which causes her to get in trouble with others. She’s very headstrong about her opinions, and is not afraid to speak out against someone else, and in turn she butts heads with most people in Maycomb. Jem A 10-13 year old Boy Oldest of Atticus’ children Scout’s older brother Named Jeremy Atticus Jem is also a very protective character, and often in the book he’d go out of his way to make sure Scout, or Dill, or even Atticus was safe. He’s a very obedient person – despite Scout’s recklessness – and listens to anyone who deserves being listened to. Jem is a very curious boy as well, and often in the beginning he is seen plotting ideas to sneak into Boo Radley’s house, or give him a letter. Dill A 7 year old Boy Dill is more a follower than a leader, usually going after Jem’s orders and listening to

However, he was loyal to both the Finch’s, and seemed to very much enjoy accompanying them on their adventures and journeys. That is, until he had to go back to Meridian.
