Consider your little toe: it is made of about 2-3 billion cells! A newly-made cell will grow, but once it reaches a certain size it will divide to form two new cells rather than growing bigger. Why is this? Why aren’t you made of a few dozen, or a few hundred cells, instead of trillions? A cell’s effectiveness is partly based on its ability to transfer substances in and out of itself. Cells are the smallest structural and functional units of living organisms and are vital to the organism’s survival and wellbeing. To know how the cell’s surface area and volume relationship would affect the cell’s ability to diffuse substances would give us a greater understanding of why cells are shaped the way they are, and could possibly answer the question as to why cells are not big, but small. In this lab, you will work with raw potatoes, cut into cubes to mimic a working model of a cell. You will cut the potatoes into cubes of predetermined size and then place the cubes in a dish containing a food-coloring solution. When the food coloring diffuses into the potato, it will produce a visible stain. After incubating all potato cubes that are simulating cells in a food-coloring solution for the same time period, you will slice open each of them to determine how far the food coloring diffused. By comparing the distance that the food-coloring diffuses into each size of cell, you will be able to find how a cell’s surface area and volume ratio could affect the cell’s effectiveness and ability to diffuse substances. This is important because the relationship between the two could show the reason as to why cells are shaped the way they are. Hypothesis: (4 pts) Predict how which potato (cell) will have the nutrients diffuse the farthest proportionally (closest to the center of the cell) in 20 minutes, and why do you think so : If the surface area of the cell size _________, then the rate of diffusion will _ be best _________ because the when the surface area _ is large _________, the volume will be small__________, therefore it would take longer for substances to diffuse into the cell.
