1 Kayla Swinson 09/14/18 Soc. 101.103 Assignment #3 The Culture of Mulan Disney’s Mulan was a movie based on a woman who lived in China during the Sui dynasty. When watching the movie, the audience can receive a slight glimpse into the ancient Chinese culture. The viewer can witness the vast difference between modern day culture and ancient culture. Viewers can see the differences in how women are treated, the norms regarding war, the different values in their society and so much more. Disney’s Mulan is a great movie to watch when a person is trying to learn more about different cultures. In the beginning of the movie, the audience can quickly witness how women were expected to live and behave. The chinese culture had their own beliefs revolving around women meaning that they had conventions they held to be true. An example from the movie of a belief would be the people believing women should always walk around in a graceful manner and serve their husbands. There was a scene in the beginning where Mulan had to go and get sanctioned by a matchmaker so she could find a husband to honor her family. Sanctioning is when someone or something gets approved or denied by a group or society. Mulan was disapproved in the movie, which in turn caused her to dishonor her family. In all societies, there are norms set so that people know how to behave in a set society. It was a norm for women to only speak when spoken

2 to in the presence of men or a person of high authority. In China, women were expected to be the homemakers while men were expected to be the head of the household and breadwinners. This was the cultural norms in China at the time. In the occurrence of a war, the man of each home as expected to go out and fight for the country. Women were not allow to fight in the war under any circumstances or they would in turn be killed as well as dishonor their family. Mulan went against the mores of China and fought in the war in the place as her injured elderly father. A more is a norm that derives from moral values. China believed that it was immoral for women to fight in the war because they were incapable of doing so. In a way, Mulan was apart of a counterculture because she disagreed with many values of the Chinese culture. She always fought the ideas of the submission of women.
