SERVANT LEADERSHIP 2 Servant Leadership “The number one value at WD-40 company is we value doing the right thing” (Ridge, 2016 pg. 54). Servant leadership is both an initiative reasoning and set of authority practices. In today’s business world there are many accounts of leaders that have been found to have an immortal approach to leadership. According to Gandofi and Stone (2018) “leadership has become increasingly more difficult, complex, and multifaceted for organizations of all types globally, thereby bringing new questions and challenges regarding the “best” type of leader” (pg. 261). Conventional leadership, for the most part, includes the collection and exercise of power by one of the highest in power. While some may say that traditional leadership is a better approach , the servant leadership has proven to influence followers, by evaluating the leadership characteristics and Garry Ridge role at WD 40 , and how he applies servant leadership to produce a successful business . First, servant leadership has proven to influence followers to perform at a high rate. We can observe this by evaluating the characteristics of a servant leader. The servant leader shares power puts the needs of others first, aids in the development and potential in others, genuinely listen to others, and inspires trust in others by being trustworthy themselves (Daft, 2018). A servant leader is a moral leader that empowers the employee to grow into the true potential that sometimes is not seen by the employee themselves. According to Heyler and Martin (2018) “Imagination and acceptance are two other important qualities a servant leader exhibits” (pg. 232). Imagination allows the leader to think outside the box and connect with the followers this act allows the follower to be more engaged in work (Heyler & Martin, 2018). A servant leader
