Chapter 22 Immune system Innate (nonspecific) immunity: general protection against invasion of a wide range of pathogens. It’s fast, non-specific and has no memory o First line of defense: external body membranes (skin and mucosae) o Second line of defense inhibits the spread of invaders Phagocytes: ingest microbes and cellular debris Neutrophils and macrophages NK cells: target cells that lack “self” cell-surfaces receptors Inflammatory response Indicated by redness, pain, heat, swelling Antimicrobial proteins Interferons are produced by virus-infected cells and they interfere with viral replication in a cell Complement system is 20 blood proteins that circulate in blood in an inactive form o Enhance other immune actions o Destroys foreign substance Fever is a systemic response to invading microorganisms Adaptive (specific) immunity: has memory o Third line of defense: attacks particular foreign substances o
