Daniel Seiden Mr. Siflinger APUSH September 23, 2019 The US Constitution: A Radical Departure from the Articles of Confederation In 1787, the US constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation, granting more power to the national government. Under the Articles of Confederation, the individual states had more power, whereas the government was weak with limited power. At first, the constitution may have seemed as a radical departure from the articles of confederation, but with a stronger federal government, bicameral legislature, and a way to levy taxes and control trade, the constitution was more effectively able to maintain law order without stripping the people of their natural rights. With no executive branch or even a president to lead the colonies, the government was weak with very little authority. The need for a centralized government intensified after Shay’s Rebellion, however, the colonists were scared to elect a president. believing this individual would become a tyrant.
