TREATMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH PTSD Name Leakeisha A Varnum Institution Professor course Date Part 1 - Section 1 What topic did the researchers study? The researcher carried out a study on children with PTSD. The study is about how PTSD can be treated in hours when CWBT and EMDR therapies are used. The study compares the time used by the eye movement desensitization and cognitive behavior writing therapy to treat PTSD. The treatments are said to take hours, "Children with PTSD can be treated in hours..." Who were the participants? How did they get their participants? The study participants were children and adolescents who were in the age of between 8 to 18 years old. These were children with PTSD. This group of participants had experience with traumatic events like sexual assault or traumatic loss. The study used 103 participants who were children and adolescents, (children and adolescents of 8 to 18…, …a total of 103 children and adolescents took part..." How did the researchers go about studying the topic? How did they measure their variables? The research was done using 103 participants. For successful treatment, the researcher used an average of 4 sessions. It shows that EMDR was effective within a short time, but the two options worked efficiently in less than 4 hours. EMDR worked for 2hours 20 min while CBWT worked for 3 hours, 47 minutes, they both worked within 4 hours to bring a positive result, "...EMR reached positive effect in 2 hr., 20 min, a CBWT in 3hrs, 47 min..." What influenced the researchers to study this particular topic? The influence was based on combining the therapies for the treatment of PTSD. This was aimed at improving how best the options can work and give the most effective result on the treatment of PTSD, "...the researchers at …compare the two the therapies." Prior to this research study, what was previously known about this topic? Before this study, therapists used PTSD treatment options without considering the time that was required for treatment. The possibilities include eye desensitization and reprocessing, cognitive behavior writing therapy, medical and play therapy. These options were used by therapists, without considering the time they take to treat, but they did work efficiently. Treatments like the EMDR and trauma-based work well in adults, but not adolescents and children. This study shows how quick the two therapies can work and more especially in children, "... neither therapy has been studied in children and adolescents." How do you think what was previously known about this topic and findings from previous research influenced the research design and choice of participants in this study? The study that was published in a journal in 2014 about PTSD showed that children who did not receive the necessary treatment were at risk of developing other problems or traumatized, "… are at risk of developing further problems..." There was also a problem for health professionals to identify symptoms of PTSD. This delayed treatment and referral.
