Define chronic disease. Any disease that develops over time as the body’s ability to resist potential pathogens and environmental threats begin to diminish (i.e. cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis) 2. What is cancer? A group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and rapid spread of abnormal cells. 3. Define metastasize. Cancer cells that spread to other parts of the body via the bloodstream or lymphatic system. 4. Describe four screening tests in the textbook that have been shown to reduce cancer deaths. a. Colonoscopy, sigmoisoscopy, and high sensitivity fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs) These tests have been shown to reduce deaths from colorectal cancer. They also help prevent colorectal cancer because they can detect abnormal colon growths (polyps) that can be removed before they develop into cancer. Expert groups generally recommend that people who are at average risk for colorectal cancer have screening at ages 50 through 75. b. Low-Dose helical computed tomography. This test to screen for lung cancer has been shown to reduce lung cancer deaths among heavy smokers ages 55 to 74.
