Dr. Amanda Vincent is the co-founder of Project Seahorse. The catalyst for starting this program was the substantial trade in seahorses for traditional medicine. There was very little information available about the entire trade: the collecting practices used, the number of fishermen relying on seahorses for livelihood, the number of animals harvested each year, the various uses of live and dried seahorses, etc. Project Seahorse scientists started researching these issues so they could attempt to protect seahorses and the marine environment as a whole. Research began by gathering information about the seahorse trade. Surveys were done in the field and many different people were consulted: fisherman from small island states, boat captains, market vendors, scientists, traditional medicine doctors, etc. Dr. Vincent and her staff found that harvesting seahorses in the wild was a difficult job. Most seahorse fisherman would gladly change occupations if the opportunities were available. Many small scale fishermen were
