Carbon Carbon is one of the most important elements in the world. Almost all chemicals pertaining to life are composed with carbon. Compounds containing carbon are called organic compounds. You are made of organic compounds. A carbon atom has four single valence electrons in its orbitals. It can form four stable covalent bonds with other atoms at these electrons. When a carbon atom is joined to four other atoms (such as four hydrogen atoms), it forms a tetrahedral shape. The bonds formed between carbon atoms or between carbon and other elements can make molecules that are straight, bent or even ring shaped, all of which add to the complexity of biological molecules. A hydrocarbon is an organic compound made up of only carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms. Long hydrocarbons tend to be non-polar due to the symmetry in their bonds. Pentane, which has five carbon atoms, is an example of a hydrocarbon. Functional groups are different elements which can be attached to any of the

For example, if an organic molecule were to have an -OH functional group attached to one of its carbon atoms, it would be known as alcohol. Carbon containing compounds may also have double or triple bonds depending on how many bonds are formed between two carbon atoms. The following table describes some of the more common types of bonds and functional groups (Note: select the image to see the full size image): Untitled Document ... 2 of 3 11/10/2019, 7:33 pm Many of the biological organic molecules are called macromolecules and consist of many repeating subunits. These will be described in subsequent sections. Untitled Document ... 3 of 3 11/10/2019, 7:33 pm...

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
