Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are the major source of food and the major form of energy for most living organisms. When sugars combine together to form the carbohydrate polymer, they can function as long term food storage molecules, as protective coverings for cells and organisms, as the main structural support for land plants and, as the parts of many cells. The word carbohydrate means "carbon and water". As such, the general formula for all carbohydrates is C (H O) An example of a carbohydrate would be: C (H O) or C H O Sugars, which are the simplest forms of carbohydrates, are the major energy storage molecules for living organisms. Their carbon rings contain large amounts of energy. There are several simple sugar monomers (or monosaccharides as they are often called). One monosaccharide is called glucose. If two glucose monosaccharides are joined together by dehydration synthesis, then a disaccharide called maltose is formed along with a molecule of water.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
