Chapter 19 Structure of blood vessel walls o Arteries and veins have three layers Tunica intima (endothelial lining), tunica media (smooth), tunica externa (connective) o Lumen: central blood containing space o Capillaries: thin walls consisting of endothelium and a supporting basal lamina Two types of arteries o Elastic (conducting): elastic fibers Aorta and major branches Large lumen o Muscular (distributing) more smooth muscle Arterioles are the smallest arteries o Control flow into capillary beds o Able to change their diameter Capillaries are microscopic vessels that are the site of gas exchange, nutrients, and wastes o Their walls have pericytes o Connect arterioles and venules o Three types: continuous, fenestrated, sinusoidal Venules are the smallest vessels of the venous part of circulation Veins have valves o Able to change their diameter and help regulate blood flow Venous sinuses are flattened veins with extremely thin walls o
