I believe everything happens for a reason. When I got into a car crash last year, I learned a valuable lesson about focus and attention. I let my thoughts and speech take over my mind and distract me in a situation where I needed to pay attention. I was 16 and my older brother gave me his cherished car from his high school days. I remember times as the younger sibling sitting in the backseat, jamming with my brothers, bonding over the music, and feel of the road. About three weeks into my ownership of the car, I was finishing up a few errands and decided to call my mom. While talking on the phone, I came to an intersection, focused on the conversation with my mom, and ran a red light. I didn’t realize my mistake at first and BAM! a pickup truck just slammed into the front left section of my car, totaling it. I was in complete shock and horror while trying to discern the situation that had just unfolded. Even though the car was totaled, I was extremely

Unformatted text preview: lucky. I could have lost everything. I learned a valuable lesson that day that even a seemingly simple task like driving, focus and attention to the task at hand is key. No matter how small, easy, or routine the job is, I must put in 100 percent of my effort. For weeks following the crash, my learning continued. My parents wanted me to get the full impact of my actions, so I had to deal with the insurance and repair shops. I had to be proactive to get things done as it was my mess, and nobody was going to clean it up for me. I continued this lesson into other areas of my life. When it comes to school, family, and religion, I have been more attentive to what is in front of me ever since that day. In the moment, the whole experience was a nightmare, but I realize now that it's shaped me into the diligent, proactive, and persistent individual I am today....
