Cat Obermeier A homely rodent may hold cancer-fighting clues Vera Gorbunova and Andrei Seluanov, a team of biologists at the University of Rochester, have identified a unique compound that blocks cancer. The compound was found in the naked mole rats, and is being tested now to see if it can be given to other mice to protect them. Lab mice are prone to contracting cancer; the naked mole rat however can live for more than thirty years and there has never been one found that had cancer. To help understand how this can be scientist have examined the cells of naked mole rats, they also infected them viruses that are known to cause cancer in mice, but the rats did not contract cancer. Gorbunova and Seluanov may have found a clue to why the naked mole rat does not contract cancer. In most mammals cells grow and divide until they bump into other cells, Gorbunova and Seluanov have found that the cells of naked mole rats are much more sensitive and stop growing at a third of the density of other mammals cells. Additionally, Gorbunova and Seluanov discovered that after a few days the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
