Joel Alejos Mr Rupp Physics 6th 18 November 2018 Inertial Mass The myth that they are trying to debunk is whether the James Bond movies are accurate. In one of the movies James Bond is surrounded by “bad guys” and pulls out his 9mm and shoots a propane tank making it explode, allowing him to make an escape. The myth they will be debunking is whether or not propane tanks explode due to a gun shot by any gun. They will first be testing an empty propane tank to see if a 9mm will even penetrate it. They set an empty propane tank 20 feet away and stood behind ballistic glass to protect themselves as they shot it. The 9mm however did not pierce the empty propane tank, even when shooting it multiple times. They move up in calibers until they puncture said propane tank. They used a shotgun loaded with a slug which still did not pierce the tank. Next they move up to a .30- 06 rifle which did succeed in rupturing the tank all the way through making an exit wound out the back of the empty propane tank. They also set up behind ballistic glass like in the previous tests as well as putting a mannequin 20 feet away from it to see if it sustains any damage. They shoot the propane tank with the .30-06 and it does not explode and just leaks propane as oxygen is entered into the tank. The mannequin appears to have no sustained any damage. The myth was indeed busted, a 9mm would not even pierce through an empty propane tank. Along with that the propane tank did not explode like portrayed in the movie. Therefore relying on a propane tank to blow up is not a suitable escape plan. There were no errors that were visible in the experiments shown. However they could have used a higher caliber along with incendiary rounds to make the propane ignite making more of an explosion that they were hoping for....
