MONOMYTH IN LABYRINTH (1986) FILM 2 Monomyth in Labyrinth (1986) Film Jim Henson’s film Labyrinth is a fantasy movie that runs its story with Sarah Williams as the star. It is a weekend and Sarah feels burdened with babysitting. Her active imagination summons Goblins to take her half brother Toby. Sarah follows him in the fantasy world to rescue his brother. Shockingly, Goblin King’s castle is heavily guarded by labyrinth, a twisted deception popularized with various characters with unknown dangers. Labyrinth (1986) film strongly confirms to the monomyth pattern using Sarah Williams as the heroine who surpasses all odds to save his brother Toby who has been captured by Goblin King. Ideally, all the twelve stages of the hero’s adventure are well expressed through the film. These include; Sarah’s ordinary world; the call to adventure; refusal to the call; crossing the threshold; meeting the mentor; tests, allies and enemies; ordeal, death and rebirth; approach; seizing the sword; the road back; the elixir; and finally the resurrection. Sarah’s Ordinary World The film begins with Sarah William a thirteen years old girl who lives an ordinary life like other teens. She hates the responsibility of taking care of his baby brother Toby. Her typical day is spent in her hometown and her parent’s house. Sarah’s world is full of fantasy and imagination. She keeps re-enacting as a heroine from her imaginary world wishing she is one. She is upset with her parents for turning her into a babysitter and wishes her younger brother, Toby is taken away from her sight. Call to Adventure Angered by his younger brother Toby after crying for a while, Sarah wishes he is taken
