Slide 1 Differentiated instruction Textbooks, lessons, and diverse learners What Should Teachers Do? Part 4: Teachers, Leaders, & Diverse Learners Curriculum and instruction have come a long way for diverse learners. When I was in school, we read books about Dick and Jane. Dick and Jane were two white children with blonde hair and blue eyes who played with a dog named Spot. See Spot run! Spot could be considered the most diverse character in the Dick and Jane stories because he was a dog (rather than a person) with black and white spots. Many of the books we now see in schools address diverse people and subjects. Children’s literature, history books, and science texts, among others, features diverse peoples with varying cultural, social, and linguistic backgrounds. Teachers learn diverse instructional strategies in teacher education programs and through professional development. Differentiated instruction has become a hallmark for addressing the needs of diverse learners. But how do we know what students need?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
