NAS Intended Audience The audience for this speech would be women who wish to become pregnant, pregnant women, and young families. This topic would also be beneficial for the general public as to how substance abuse affects the newborn infant. This topic is significant because substance abuse is at an all-time high, especially in women of child bearing years. We need to bring more aware- ness to that group of people on what effects this has for their child. Presentation Plan 1. Introduction a. Audience Hook : There is just something about a newborn baby that brings a smile to our face and warmth in our heart. A mother should be bonding in the hours and days following birth not dealing with tremors, feeding difficulties, vomiting, and other painful withdrawal symptoms. Unfortunately, because of the opioid epidemic in America, this trend shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. b. Thesis Statement : Research studies indicate that a baby is born with Neonatal Absti- nence Syndrome (NAS) every 25 minutes? ( National Institute on Drug Abuse; Na - tional Institutes of Health; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Septem - ber 2015 ). The Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring System is the tool of choice to determine how severe the withdrawal symptoms are and if treatment is needed for these infants. There are many different treatment options available for these infants including pharmacological treatment. c. Preview of main points: i. The Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring Tool is used for determining how se- vere withdrawal symptoms are for infants experiencing NAS.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
