2.04 Coming to America Dear Family, I’m writing this letter from Brooklyn, New York. The city is nothing like it is back home in Ireland. The city is much larger and more crowded. I have seen people from China, Russia, and even some of our own people from Ireland. I work in a shoemaking factory, its not extravagant but I make a decent income. I live in a small apartment just big enough to call home. Someday maybe you can come visit. I apologize for leaving without asking for your blessings first, but when I heard the promise of leading a good life in American, I had to take the chance. When I arrived in America, I saw a grand statue, it was very large. Some people were calling it “The Statue of Liberty”, I hope you will all see it someday. When the ship docked, everyone flooded out. Then we were inspected by doctors for illnesses since many people on the ship became sick. I felt like an outcast when I first moved into the city.
