Johnson 1 Taishima Johnson Professor Anderson ENG-101 30 0ctober 2019 The Gay Option In the world today, people are being judged based upon their sexuality, or who they choose to love. The essay “The Gay Option” by Stephanie Fairyington, tells a story about the way society perceives people that are gay. Being that she’s a part of the LGBT population, she feels that people don’t understand the concept of having affection towards the same sex. In the 1970s, not only did people treat gay as a birth defect, but they also believed it could be treated through psychological treatment or medication. In 1980s-1990s, homosexuality was considered immutable (Fairyington, p.58). People make the gay community feel like they don’t fit in with the world, or they are unnatural. So, why isn’t being a same sex normal? Why do people think that same-sex attraction can be cured? When people choose to be gay, it should be their choice and not everyone’s opinion. Even though Fairyington wanted justice for the LGBT community, she insisted on writing a coming-out letter to her mom titled, “I was born this way, (Fairyington,p.58).” In her letter, she
