Alexis Turner Eng 102 Casting Agent Paper The story I chose for this assignment is Cathedral by Raymond Carver (1981). Instead of picking actors that represent the characters in the stories I chose to use different fruits to do so. Based off of my opinions of the fruit and perceptions of the characters. For the main character who is telling the story, I would say he is an orange. The wife would be a blueberry. Last but not least the blind man Robert, would be a kiwi. It is not based off these fruits for their mere physical appearance but for their qualities attached to them. First, an orange was the first thing that popped into my head when I thought about the main character. An orange is usually very bitter, which I inferred about the narrator. When speaking to his wife and explaining who the blind man was he made multiple bitter comments. For example, “I wasn’t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And him being blind bothered me.” (Paragraph 1) Then again ”So when the time rolled around, my wife went to the depot to pick him up. With nothing to do but wait— sure, I blamed him for that.” (Paragraph 17) Besides bitter, this character is extremely sarcastic and seems to like to bother his wife with his questions and comments. How do you eat an orange? Well, you must peel the outside skin to then reveal the fruit on the inside. Just like an orange, who has a different appearance on the inside. By the end of the story, we see the main character in a different point of view. The orange is a representation of the narrator but doesn’t grasp him fully. He is a drunk, who drinks constantly for every event throughout the day. Between the dope and alcohol, it’s like
