BIO 123 (Remember, you are responsible for all material in your book, lecture notes and my verbal presentation) Review Know definitions and give examples of the characteristics of living things 1.Grow and Develop 2.Need material and Energy. 3.Reproduction 4.Characterstics depend on DNA 5.Made up of cells 6.Respond to Stimuli 7.Can evolve Define Natural Selection Know categories of organisms that utilize energy: Autotrophs, heterotrophs, Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers Know and explain the elements of the scientific method A process that is used to solve scientific problems with an experiment. Elements are hypothesis, observation, procedure, experiment, data, conclusion, variable (Manipulated: being tested, controlled: what you control in the experiment, responding: the results of the experiment) Know the structure and function of the plasma membrane A thin layer surrounding a cell’s content, controlling what comes in or out of the cell. Transfers chemical messages from external to the cells interior. Define the term selective permeability and describe the importance of this concept to the function of the cell. Selectively Permeable allows certain substances through while others cannot. It is important to prevent harmful substances from entering and damaging the cell. Explain why S. J. Singer described the plasma membrane as a fluid mosaic model. The membrane proteins are inserted into the phospholipid bilayer. The membrane is a collage of proteins and other molecules embedded in the fluid matrix of lipid bilayer. Describe the amphipathic nature of phospholipids and proteins and how this characteristic contributes to membrane organization and to the functions of integral membrane proteins. They have a hydrophilic and hydrophobic end. Characteristics contribute to the membrane due to the stability which allows water to pass through. List functions and give examples of different membrane associated proteins. -Transport-Hydrophilic channel (Water loving) - Enzymatic Activity-Sequential steps in metabolic pathway -Signal transduction-relay chemical messages -Intercellular joining-various cell junctions -Cell-Cell recognition-glycoprotein identification tags -Attachment to the cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix (ECM)-cell shape and stabilize proteins Describe types of membrane transport proteins and give examples of both passive and active transport. Transport is where molecules can cross the membrane through proteins that span the membrane Passive is diffusion of molecules that require no energy, and molecules move in response to a concentration gradient. Diffusion is movement of high concentration to low concentration. Osmosis is a specialized form of diffusion with water. Active transport requires energy. ATP, moves substances from low concentration to high concentration.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
