Migao He Assignment 1 Section 1: Daiya Cheddar Cutting Board Shreds is a product designed by Daiya Foods Inc. It is low in calorie, dairy-free, soy-free, plant-based, contains no cholesterol nor trans fat, and a good source of calcium (Daiya Foods, 2019). People tend to buy food with benefits, whereas 49% of customers want to get heart health benefits from food, 39% are looking for weight management benefits, and 18% are seeking for bone health benefit food products (Sloan, 2019). The demand of customers for heart health can be met by the 0 cholesterol and 0 trans fat levels of Daiya Shreds, while the low-calorie level of Daiya is suitable for customers looking for weight control. Furthermore, Daiya Shreds is also a good source of Calcium which is essential for bone health. In addition, Daiya Shreds is a purely plant-based product designed for vegans and people with dairy, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, and gluten allergies. It’s interesting to know that according to Canada Nutrient File (2019), 60% whole wheat bread has 61kcal of energy per slice (23g), which is almost the same amount of calorie per serving as the plant-based Daiya Shreds. In contrast, the Kraft animal-based cheese shred has around 64% more calories (110kcal per 28g serving size) compared to the plant-based Daiya shreds with the same serving size (Kraft Foods, 2019). Also, Daiya Cheese Shreds contains no protein per serving even though potato protein isolate is added (Daiya Foods, 2019).
