POVERTY AND LOW-INCOME CHILDREN 2 Poverty and low-income Children: Barriers to Social and Emotional Development Introduction Poverty has long-term implications for the well-being of children. The effects of poverty such as delayed development, emotional issues, and low academic achievement put children at a disadvantage compared to those from high-income families. In the United States, a family of four earning less than $22,050 annually is considered poor. It is estimated that 14 million children in the country live in poverty (Alderman, 2011). Additionally, 19% of children in the country live in families that have problems meeting their basic needs such as food and water. Children from poor and low-income families experience challenges with their social and emotional development. They are more likely to develop emotional and behavioral problems such as disobedience, impulsiveness, difficulties relating with peers, and low self-esteem. If measures are not taken to help children cope with the challenges of poverty, their emotional and social development will be compromised, which in turn affects educational attainment and life outcomes. Impacts of Poverty on Social and Emotional Development Children from poor and low-income families struggle with attachment problems. Parents play an essential role during early childhood by helping their children develop secure attachment. As attachment figures, parents help children manage anxiety when children are still completely dependent on them. Parents who respond to the needs of their children appropriately and engage in sensitive receptiveness help the child develop secure attachment. The child-caregiver relationship forms the foundation by which the infant forms healthy, trustworthy, loveable, or unhealthy, anxious, and avoidant relationships in the future (Treanor, 2016). Economic hardship associated with poverty contributes to family stress and negatively affects the mental and

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
