NURS 6630, Week 7 Main Question Post Case 1: Volume 2, Case #16: The woman who liked late-night TV The patient presented in the case study is a 70-year-old woman who exhibits symptoms of depression. Her son and aide assist in her overall care. She is hard of hearing is a candidate for cochlear implants. She reports being lonely at home has decreased mobility, which has affected her outside of home social life. Her medical history includes some cardiological conditions, as well as hypothyroidism and anemia. Her family history consists of depression. Her depression has worsened recently due to reports of insomnia and restless leg syndrome. Questions for Patient 1. How long have you had difficulty sleeping? Are you having trouble staying asleep through the night? On average, how many hours of sleep are you getting at night? Are you feel tired during the day? A few different sleep disorders include insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. According to Parekh (2017), lack of sleep results in decreased energy, irritability, problems focusing, inability to make decisions, and exacerbate depression or anxiety. 2. Are you compliant with your home medication regimen? Have you been taking your current medications prescribed by your provider? Currently, the patient's son and the home health aide are assisting with his care. Questions should be directed to the patient but also her son and health aide regarding the medication regimen for confirmation. It is known the patient is on Synthroid for hypothyroidism. According to the National Health Service (2018), common symptoms of hypothyroidism are tiredness, weight gain, weakness, and slow movement and thoughts along with memory problems and

depression in the elderly. Within the presented case study, the 70-year-old woman is experiencing all these symptoms. 3. Have you ever suffered from depression, anxiety, or any mental disorder? Pt exhibited symptoms of depression, such as crying and sadness. Questions for People in Patients Life Obtaining information from a patient suffering from mental alterations may not offer accurate information associated with their prevailing conditions because of the possible cognitive interference with aging. In this case study, it is vital to seek a second opinion relating to the signs and symptoms presented, social life, medical history, and the family psychiatric history from relevant people in the life of the patient. To obtain additional information, I would speak to the patient’s son and home health aide. Questions I would ask them would be a followed: 1.
