Sound Waves: Key Concepts Physical concepts sound wave a longitudinal pressure wave periodic a sound wave that repeats itself cycle a complete oscillation (crest and trough of a wave) period time required for one cycle (seconds) frequency number of cycles per second (Hz) amplitude maximum air pressure fluctuation intensity amount of acoustic energy flow Psychological concepts pitch perception of frequency loudness perception of intensity tone perception of a periodic wave noise perception of an aperiodic wave

Let’s check our understanding Physical concepts 1. Are sound waves longitudinal or transverse waves? 2. What is the relationship between frequency and period ? 3. You see a flash of lightening in the sky. Five seconds later, you hear thunder. How far away did the lightening occur? Psychological concepts What is the acoustic property that gives us the perception of: 4. Pitch ?

Every object has a natural frequency , that is, a particular frequency at which it will vibrate when struck Some objects produce a single frequency, i.e. pure tone (e.g. flutes) Some objects produce a set of frequencies (e.g. tuba, pencil) If frequencies are mathematical multiples (periodicity!), then you get a complex wave If not (aperiodic!), you get noise Natural Frequency

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
