THE TRANSITION OF POWER IN THE PHILIPPINES DURING WORLD WARD II 2 The transition was from Manuel L. Quezon to José P. Laurel leadership. All was not well during the era of World War II to Filipino and American forces. Over 1.5 million Japanese civilians and approximately 700,000 military personnel at ending of World War II were left in Manchuria, the former colony of Japan. The new era began with the massive air attacks on December 8, 1941, on naval installations and U.S military by the enemy. The attack happened some hours later after the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor 1 . The occasion left fear to the heart of the most civilians after a persistent drive on land to shelter Manila was almost left unharmed. The authorities had no panic despite the massive attacks and had to urge everyone to continue with daily activities. People went on with their daily activities despite the fear in their hearts. The sitting president by then his Excellency Quezon had urged everyone to stay calm. However, President Quezon kept on giving the best he can to mitigate the terrific blow of the total war on the residents. He met with state council and cabinet every day until December 24, 1941, before he departed for Corregidor. The initial ethereal air raid was trailed via arrivals of ground forces both south and north of Manila. The shielding United States and Philippine forces were under General Douglas MacArthur control during the attack. MacArthur had been reviewed to the dynamic obligation in the U.S army before in the year. He was assigned as the U.S armed forces officer in the Pacific region of the Asia 2 . His airplanes forces were crushed and the maritime powers instructed to go away. In light of the conditions in the Pacific district, resupply and fortification of his ground powers were outlandish. Beneath the weight of prevalent figures, the shielding powers pulled back to Manila Bay via the Corregidor Island and the Bataan Peninsula. While poring over the 1 Lassieur, A. (2016).
