Thompson 1 Alissa R. Thompson Mr. Michaud Advanced Composition 8 January 2010 The Dreadful Sight Everyone dreads seeing the red and blue lights behind them. No one ever wants to hear the words “license and registration please”. Even though no one ever really likes police officers, I still want to become one. I have always found law enforcement and criminal justice interesting. Throughout this paper, I will discuss the duties of the job and the hours officers work, the salary ranges and working conditions, the education, training, and personal qualities required, the advantages and disadvantages, and the future outlook of the job. I will also discuss the interview and shadow day I had with an officer. From my library research, interview, and shadow day, I hope to gain information to help me decide if becoming a police officer is what I really want to do in the future. Section I: Library Research Being a police officer requires many duties. Their main job is to enforce laws and protect peoples’ lives and property. They investigate crimes and accidents, collect and process evidence, and testify at trials. They are allowed to question people and arrest them for committing crimes or being disturbing in public. Police officers also escort citizens, guard prisoners, direct traffic around special events, and assist in crowd control. While they fulfill these duties, it requires police officers to work many hours. They are on call twenty-four hours a day, but rotate shifts (Echaore 2-3). Junior officers usually have to work on the weekends, during holidays, and work the night shifts (U.S. Dept. of Labor 409). Police officers have many different duties and work

Thompson 2 many hours to protect their community. A Police officer’s salary will vary depending on their rank. On average, their salary varies between $27,000 to $68,000 a year (Echaore 3). Police officers work in all types of conditions. Depending on where an officer is located, there could be extreme weather conditions like snow storms. Also, some areas are more dangerous than others, so a police officer could be more likely to get injured (“Public” 73). Police officers earn good money for the conditions they work under. There is a decent amount of education required for becoming a police officer. A person will need a high school diploma or a General Education Diploma. At some police departments one “may need some college credits in police science or other things related to it. Some departments require an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.” In accordance to that, one will need to complete twelve to fourteen weeks of training at a police academy. Then, they are “assigned to patrol duty under the supervision of field-training officers” (Echaore 3). After completing the training, one will have to pass written and oral exams. They also will have to undergo a complete background check and take a drug test (“Police” 17). There is a lot of education and training one must go through in order to become a police officer.
