Brianna Cozino 11/06/2018 35L Atomic Spectra Post-Lab Post-Lab Questions 1. Whenever you look at an element undergoing fluorescence, why do you see multiple colors in a line spectrum, but only a single color with your un-aided eyes? These multiple colors represent the different wavelengths emitted by the element. Our unaided eyes can only see the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. 2. Calculate energy associated with the four major energy transitions in the hydrogen atom. Assume the final energy level is 2 for each. ! 1 #\$ 4.85 × 10 +,- ࠵? 2.18 × 10 ,0 1 + 3 1 4 45 = 6 ! 1 #\$ 4.58 × 10 +,- 2.18 × 10 ,0 1 + 3 1 4 45 = 5 8 1 #\$ 3.41 × 10 +,- 2.18 × 10 ,0 1 + 3 1 4 45 = 3 ! 1 #\$ 3.03 × 10 +,- 2.18 × 10 ,0 1 + 3 1 4 45 = 3 Discussion 1. Write a brief summary of your experiment. As part of this, you have to describe: In this lab, the main goal was to understand how the emission spectra works by identifying unknown gas samples, understanding Bohr’s model and visualizing energy inputs. In the experiment, light was observed in different forms including, gaseous elements, alkali metals

The spectroscope allowed for viewing of the light to determine the wavelengths. In part one, the spectroscope was used to view different gas samples. In part two, flames were lit and the metal that was being exposed to heat was viewed using the spectroscope. Lastly, the spectroscope was used to view florescent, LED and incandescent light. The identities of the metals were; LiCl, KCl, cupric sulfate hydrate, calcium chlorate dihydrate and sodium carbonate. 3. Based on what you saw through your spectroscopes, how did the light from the three light sources compare to each other? The LED wavelength ranged from about 445-718 nm, the florescent ranged from about 445-615nm and the incandescent ranged from about 410-690 nm. LED light had the widest range across the color spectrum, demonstrating that it is one of the better light sources compared to the other two....

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
