M2A1-Writing Collaboratively: Pro-Collaboration Collaboration in any form is beneficial, Stephen Spielberg once stated, “When I was a kid, there was no collaboration; it’s you with a camera bossing your friends around. But as an adult, filmmaking is all about appreciating the talents of the people you surround yourself with and knowing you could never have made any of these films by yourself,” (Miyamoto, a quote from Spielberg, 2018). This is a very powerful statement and applies to collaboration as a writer, not just in film. When an individual relies on only their talents for research, editing and all other aspects of technical writing, they are limited to their own experiences and skills. Working collaboratively gives one the ability to reach the reader in many different ways, due to the variety of experiences in each collaborator. One individual on the team may be the only one that can understand the way other cultures interpret information because they have traveled around the world and studied other cultures. The added benefit of this is that you can now interest people from around the world and not just your culture or geographic area. Many more benefits are discovered when working collaboratively. The examples of pro- collaboration that are listed in our module are the following: draws on greater knowledge and skill base than individual writing, provides a better sense of audience, enables people to share responsibility for the document, improves communication among employees, improves the socialization of new employees (Excelsior College, 2019).
