Aerospace Propulsion (MEC 4280/4740) Dr. Raed Kafafy 2 Introduction Introduction Environmental Impact Problems caused by the impact of aerospace propulsion systems on the environment ( pollution ) which includes Noise, Sonic Boom, Exhaust Gas Emissions Effect of the environment on the engine due to ingestion of fine matter or large objects, which is referred to as Foreign Object Damage (FOD) Noise Pollution due to hearing response of persons and animals to incident waves Sonic Boom Very strong shock waves which may cause serious injury or structural damage Exhaust Gas Emissions Odors, acids, smog, depletion of ozone layer, green house effect Foreign Object Damage It affects structural integrity and causes in-service deterioration which are controlled by operations and airworthiness certification

Aerospace Propulsion (MEC 4280/4740) Dr. Raed Kafafy 3 Noise Noise What is Noise? Noise (like sound) is pressure waves propagated in medium (NOT vacuum) at a speed determined by the elasticity of medium (gas, liquid or solid) Noise is caused by sound waves of random frequency Strength of noise is measured by SPL in dB (deci-Bell) Human reaction to noise depends on the ear response

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
