European Parliament Elections Introduction The Current European Parliamentary Elections were held between 23th and 26th of May 2019. The polls were for the ninth parliament since the first direct elections in the year 1979. A total number of 751 Members of the European Parliament were elected to represent the 28 member states. The paper analyzes the law and social aspects of the May European Parliament elections. Outdated Laws The UK government failed to reform the outdated legislation in the current elections that resulted in multiple European Union (EU) citizens living in the UK and the British citizens living abroad failing to vote. The law stated that civilians living abroad were to fill a separate form that declared them as voters in the UK. In this regard, thousands of the nationals were prevented from accessing the polling stations during the polls day as they were not aware of the signing form. Voters who were aware of the signing form claimed that they were informed late; thus, they had no time to fill the form. Additionally, Britons in Europe lacked ballot papers where they could have cast their votes as the materials were supplied late, and also they lacked time to submit the ballot papers[ CITATION OCa19 \l 1033 ]. Electoral System The EU government introduced the Spitzenkandidaten (lead candidate) procedure that stated that the candidate of a party that won with the most seats in the election was to become the president of the European commission. In this regard, the citizens did not directly elect the head of the executives. The system allowed the respective parties to announce the candidates that were

to lead their respective lists with the parties promising them that they will be chosen as heads of governments in [ CITATION Rus19 \l 1033 ]. Women in Political Decision-Making Gender equality is required in the election to ensure balanced representation. Political parties require the full integration of women at all levels. The balance of gender results in parity democracy, which holds social justice and women's rights, thus resulting in good governance and strengthening of democratic systems. The European Parliament elections resulted in 751 seats that were little more than a third that was currently held by women The emergence of New Political Balances The current European parliament elections suggested the development of several shifts that included the departure of British MPs. The change resulted in a decrease in the number of members from 705 to 701. Additionally, the polls resulted in the readjustment of members of parliament from specific countries to maintain and provide an account for the balance and a report for demographic changes.
