PSY 3114 ORGANISATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY Subject Overview Programme : BSc (Hons) Psychology Subject Lecturer : Dr.M.S. Priyadarshini : [email protected] Lecture/ Tutorial Duration : August 2019 –December 2019 Lecture : Monday: - 12:00PM – 2:00 PM(Hall 2) Tutorial : Thursday: - 12:00PM – 2:00 PM - TG 1 (UC-3-3) Friday: - 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM TG 2 (UC-5-7) 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM - TG 3 (UC-3-3) Consultation hours : By appointment only Subject Description This course will focus on three main areas in organizational psychology namely personnel topics such as job analysis, recruitment, assessment, and selection; organizational topics such as training, motivation, job attitudes, job performance, and leadership; and work environment such as organizational structure, culture and development. Subject Objectives The aim of this course is to provide students with an in-depth look at the functioning of organisations and to demonstrate how psychological theories are used to explain human behaviors in organisations. In particular, the course is structured such that basic theories and paradigms of organizational psychology and how they are applied in organizational settings are taught. Teaching within this course would have the following objectives: Descriptions of theories of leadership, motivation and job attitude applied to workers. Usage of psychological tests in the assessment and selection of employees Student led class discussions based on assigned journal articles to encourage students to take a more critical look at issues and topics relevant to work organizations. Learning Outcomes Upon completing this course, students will be able to: Review various I/O Psychological theories/paradigms Discuss how Psychological theories/paradigms may be applied to understanding human behaviors at work Perform job analysis using various concepts of I/O Psychology Delivery Methods Lectures are delivered with MS Power Point as visual aid. Each lecture covers a major topic. Students should note that while each lecture is self-contained in terms of presentation, the topics are closely interrelated, and this interconnectedness is essential to their understanding of the substance of this course. While the focus will be on conveying facts and issues, lectures also point students to important readings that would supplement the lectures. These recommended readings are part of the knowledge base on which students are assessed. 1

Tutorials are designed to supplement lectures, encouraging students to discuss relevant issues and helping them to strengthen their understanding of the contents of the lectures. Tutorials consist mostly of discussion topics, student led presentation and discussion of journal articles, and/or short exercises that students are expected to complete in class. These journal articles either provides broad overview of a content area or they reflect recent or future developments of topics in organizational psychology. Students are expected to participate actively in all tutorial discussions.
