Chapter 26 Notes 1. USSR: United Soviet Socialist Republic 2. Cold War: term used to describe the conflict between the US and the USSP in which the two powers would avoid direct conflict but work to limit the other’s influence in the world. 3. Yalta Conference: The Yalta Conference took place in a Russian resort town in the Crimea from February 4–11, 1945, during World War Two. At Yalta, U.S. - President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin made important decisions regarding the future progress of the war and the postwar world. 4. Potsdam Conference: The Big Three—Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (replaced on July 26 by Prime Minister Clement Attlee), and U.S. President Harry Truman—met in Potsdam, Germany, from July 17 to August 2, 1945, to negotiate terms for the end of World War II 5. Iron curtain: Churchill’s description of the border between communist Eastern Europe and democratic Western Europe 6. Fall-out shelters: A shelter built with the intent to house and protect people from nuclear fallout…usually underground 7. Containment/Kennan: the prevailing American foreign policy toward communism.
