Parkinson 1 Jordan Parkinson Brother d'Evegnee ENG 251-03 11 July 2016 A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning Throughout the ages of time, the greatest minds have attempted to explain what it is to love. The greatest tragedies and comedies in literature have documented this journey, and have described love as something both condemning and redeeming. In John Donne’s poem A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning , he expresses that love is something nearing celestial. Rather than trying to put love into strict boundaries and definitions, Donne contends through this poem that love is something indecipherable. Donne writes early on in the poem about the sacred nature of this celestial kind of love. He writes: “’Twere profanation of our joys to tell the laity of our love.” (“A Valediction…” 7-8) Donne tells us here that the type of love that he has experienced is one of great joy, but such that to try and explain it to those who don’t understand is a form of profanity. This reflects back upon the overall indescribable nature of the kind of love that he is really speaking about. It is a love
