Parkinson 1 Jordan Parkinson Brother Wiblin HIST 394 19 July 2018 The Irrigation Station 1. Mission The Irrigation Station will be an extension of the current children’s room in the Museum of Rexburg. This exhibit will seek to inform children of all ages about irrigation and its importance, both now and in the past, as a necessity in our agricultural community. Additionally, it will give children the option for hands on approaches and problem solving as they learn more about the environment and how it has been and can be manipulated in order to produce more resources. 2. Introduction While known for its fertile volcanic soil, the Rexburg area has not always been particularly hospitable to agriculture. In the early days of settlement, one of the main issues farmers faced was that of irrigation. Rexburg is formally classified as a desert, and as such the early farmers often lost their crop due to the lack of water available to irrigate all of their land. In response to this, there were several different innovations which early farmers put in place in order to be able to effectively irrigate their crops. The earliest form of irrigation is known as flood irrigation. From different rivers or lakes, canals and ditches were created and taken to farmland by Canal Companies. The farmers could pay the Canal Companies for the use of the canals and ditches, and use the water to flood their fields enough to water their crops. As time went on, the need for appropriate irrigation only grew as the agriculture in the area

Parkinson 2 continued to develop. As such, irrigation in Rexburg has a significant history and importance. The Irrigation Station will not only seek to teach children this history and significance, but strive to help them understand how the environment and technology must work together in order to produce resources for a population. The exhibit will feature different hands on activities, such as an opportunity to somehow create and irrigate their own farm, that will enable the children to put into practice what they have learned and understand how actions like these impact the community in which they live. 3. Institutional Contextualization The Museum of Rexburg strives to connect those in the community with the past by the telling of stories. It strives to have a significant meaning attached to every object displayed in the museum so as to engage the visitors with their local history. The Irrigation Station will add to this mission in a similar and unique way. It seeks to connect visitors, particularly children, with their local history and help teach them the importance of agriculture in the local economy. By focusing specifically on irrigation, the children are exposed to a problem that has had to be solved in the past, and is a continual effort.
