Parkinson 1 Jordan Parkinson Brother Merrill ENG 327 21 February 2018 The Prestige of Dialects Throughout history, prestige dialects have frequently risen to the top of society, always showing some kind of heavy influence on the languages before them. This happened significantly at two points in this history of the English language: once when the Anglo-Saxons “invaded” England in the 5 th century, and again with the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. A prestige dialect is defined as a form of a language which has higher prestige than the others within a political unit, which acts as a brake on the divergent tendencies in the language (55). Essentially the language that is mostly spoken by the elite is most often seen in the types of media that come from that political unit. The Anglo-Saxon invasion of England can hardly be called an invasion, as history points out. But at the time of this invasion, the native language of those living in England was Old British. This dialect eventually died out as a prestige dialect, Old English, came to be used
