Parkinson 1 Jordan Parkinson Brother Merrill ENG 331-01 04 April 2016 R4: Infinite Wrath and Infinite Despair When thinking of the being that is Lucifer, the word “sympathy” is not one that comes to mind. And yet in Book IV of John Milton’s Paradise Lost , as Satan delivers a famous monologue on his state, it seems that sympathy is all the natural feeling human could think to feel. Satan remarks: “Me miserable! Which way shall I fly Infinite wrath, and infinite despair? Which way I fly is Hell; myself am hell.” (“Book IV” 73-75) In reading through this speech of Satan’s, it is abundantly clear that he realizes he had the freedom to choose and he also realizes that he chose incorrectly. At one point he even laments: “O then at least relent! Is there no place Left for repentance, none for pardon left?” (“Book IV” 79-80) Looking at this from a Christian perspective, we know that there could be room for repentance and pardon – if only Satan would choose to take this route.
