Origins: Between the homeland of elemental fire, Muspelheim, and the homeland of elemental ice, Niflheim, was a great abyss called Ginnungagap, the primeval void of chaos, silence and darkness. Slowly fire from Muspelheim and frost from Niflheim crept across Ginnungagap until they met in the middle with the fire melting the frost. The first drops created Ymir, the first of the giants, a hermaphrodite that could reproduced asexually and created more giants from his sweat. Audhumbla, a cow, also emerged from the melted frost. She nourished herself from salt-licks and she nourished Ymir with her milk. Her licks uncovered the first of the Æsir gods, Buri. He had a son named Bor who married the daughter of a giant. Their half-giant, half-god children were Odin, Vili and Ve. The three brothers sought to kill Ymir so that they could construct the world. From
